Houston Dining: Review #2

#1 Christie's Seafood & Steaks A family owned and operated seafood spot in Houston for close to 90 years. It is very well-known and widely talked about, so we just had to go see what all the fuss was about.

Location: Westheimer (1 mile WEST of the Galleria)

Environment: While there are white table cloths and cloth napkins, Christie's still has a very casual atmosphere.

Food: The food was nothing out of the ordinary. Oscar summed it up as average. For an appetizer we ordered the Fried Mini Crab Balls. Apparently those are the hot item on the menu. They were average. Our main entrees were...you guessed it - average.

Service: Okay, I promise I'm not trying to be negative...just being honest, but the service was also AVERAGE. The waiter did not seem to know much of the menu or be able to answer any questions that we had.

Price: Our main entrees were $25.00 a piece...which I would say is mighty high for an 'average' place.

Recommendations: We decided to try Christie's on Oscars birthday, because we both love seafood and trying new restaurants. Sometimes we love places and sometimes we don't. This time we didn't love it. However, dont take my word for it, give it a try and tell me your thoughts!

#2 Kublai Khan: This is exactly what the sign says 'Crazy Mongolian Stir Fry'. You can create your own stir fry meal and they will cook it up for you!

Location: We went to the one located on Westgreen and I-10 in Katy.

Environment: Very fun environment. Dim lighting, loud music, and very authentic 'Mongolian' decor (if there is such a thing).

Food: This is where Kublai Khan will win or break your heart. You create your own stir fry dish choosing from a wide variety of ingredients! You first choose your veggies: carrots, peas, tofu, onions, peppers, zucchini, almonds, etc... They have many great options!
Then you pick your meat which also comes in a wide variety: white meat chicken, beef, octopus (which looks like bologna I might add), shrimp, crab meat, etc... This is where you might struggle. All the RAW meat is laid out before you and for those who don't cook or have problems with raw meat, well you might not love this option. Lastly you choose your sauces and seasonings that you want your meal to be cooked in. It really is a fun experience. The portions are HUGE and are very hard to finish!

Price: The price is very reasonable! It is 9$ for the lunch. We ordered ours, ate until our tummy was content, and still had enough for another meal to take home!

Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this fun spot for a change to your normal 'dining out' experience. The food is great, the price is great and the environment is fun and relaxed!

#3 Berripop: A little Texas Frozen Yogurt chain.

Location: This review is from the one in La Centerra of Katy and one in City Centre of Houston.

Environment: a fun, fresh, bright and 'hip' yogurt spot. Frozen yogurt just got cooler.

Food: 'Fro-Yo' , as the cool kids say, is definitely a healthy alternative to ice cream. They offer several different flavors of yogurt and many different toppings ranging from the healthy fruits and granolas, to delicious chocolaty candy bar pieces. The original yogurt flavor is very authentic to plain yogurt and has a rather 'sour' taste to it that some people either love or hate (I love). I got the original with granola and strawberries. It was DELICIOUSO.

Price: The price is pretty comparable to any other dessert stop. Of course it varies with size and toppings.

Recommendations: If Ice cream and 'Fro-Yo' got into a taste battle, a big bowl of ice cream would win every time. However, if you have a sweet tooth (I have 3) and need a healthy treat, I highly recommend Berripop!! Super yummy treat!
